Bowman’s extensive research into the history of Mormonism from its beginnings with Joseph Smith in 1830 up to Romney’s run for President in 2012 provides a thorough historical introduction. Though this book covers a lot of ground Bowman’s writing keeps the information provided from becoming overwhelming. Bowman also keeps himself out of the book completely and in doing so keeps the book impartial and unbiased. This book is about the history of the faith and the people who are part of it and the interactions the faith has had with American politics and values. Bowman provides a reader-friendly book that gives an introduction to Mormonism during a time when many voting Americans are curious about learning more about this faith. The writing style is similar to author Nathaniel Philbrick and would recommend this book to fans of his and to those interested in Mormon history.

Pacing: Slow, this scholarly book is full of great information. I found myself rereading chapters as I was reading the book for the first time.

Comments: I started reading this book a week before the 2012 Presidential election thinking that this would be a fast and interesting read. It was interesting, but slow reading because of the amount of information presented. For libraries that do not have a strong collection of materials on Mormonism I would strongly encourage you to purchase this book. This book could be a great resources for adults looking for a scholarly read or adult and young adult patrons beginning research on Mormonism.
